Monty Don announced on September 8 that he would step down from Gardeners’ World after 23 years.

BBC has not yet named a successor to Monty Don, but the public has already made its choice clear. Don announced on September 8 that he would step down from Gardeners’ World after 23 years, though he clarified he is not retiring. The presenter shared the news in an Instagram reel, thanking followers for their messages, which he described as “encouraging, they were moving, they were kind, they were embarrassing… it was fabulous.”

Monty Don steps down after 23 years

Don has hosted the long-running show for 23 years, 16 of which were spent at his home in Longmeadow. He emphasized that his departure is not a retirement, noting that he has “other projects on the go.”

Readers choose Adam Frost as top contender

The BBC asked its audience who should replace Don, and the response was overwhelming. Adam Frost received the most votes from followers, with many calling him the only logical choice. One person on Facebook wrote that Don is “like an old friend that you have just dropped in to see,” while another stated, “If only one person, then definitely Adam Frost.”

Frost recently moved to a property with a larger garden, a detail that many readers noted as a sign he is preparing for a bigger role. One Instagram user pointed out, “Just by chance Adam’s just bought a new house with a garden which needs a complete overhaul,” suggesting the move aligns with the demands of the show.

Other names in the mix

Frances Tophill and Jamie Butterworth were also frequently mentioned as potential replacements. Some viewers expressed a desire for a younger, more energetic host, with Butterworth earning praise as “perfect.” Other names circulating in the conversation included Carol Klein, Arit Anderson, Joe Swift, Sue Kent, and Rachel de Thame. Garden designer Henry Agg and Dan Pearson were suggested as fresh faces, while Clarkson even weighed in via The Sunday Times, calling for a “safe and relaxing” presenter and naming influencer Blooms & Greens by Chloe as his top choice.

Rotation of hosts debated

A significant portion of the audience prefers a rotation of presenters rather than a single lead. One follower suggested that a “more balanced approach” would alleviate the pressure on one person to share their life on camera. Others argued that while the current lineup should remain, the show needs a refresh with new ideas.
