French jewelry designer Jean Schlumberger’s Bird on a Rock is certainly one of the twenty first century’s most iconic jewellery designs. The setting was initially designed in 1965, after Schlumberger encountered a yellow cockatoo that impressed his sensible imagination. The yellow gold and platinum brooch includes a bird set with diamonds and a pink sapphire on an emerald-cut tanzanite ‘rock’. Manufacturers of lab-grown diamonds – that are 80% cheaper than pure diamond – additionally claimed that export volumes have elevated with the US being the largest importer.
